How Vernon Farms Began

Vernon Farms consists of two farms in Shelby County, Tennessee. The oldest farm is located in Lakeland, TN and was settled in 1828. Charles grew up on this farm and he and Emma live there today. Charles is the fifth generation of his family to live and work on the farm. In 1976, our farm received the Century Farm Family Land Heritage Certificate of Honor.

The second farm is Emma's family farm. Her ancestors purchased the first parcel in 1933. This farm is located in the Cordova, TN community. Emma is the third generation of her family to work this farm.

Organizations and Experience

Charles and Emma have been reared on farms and around cattle all of their lives. In 1992, the family started a registered Black Angus herd. We are members of the American Angus Association since 1993.

Both are members of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and the local Cattlemen's Association. Both Charles and Emma are graduates of both the Tennessee Master Beef Producer program and the Advanced Master Beef Producer classes.

They have attended classes offered by the Center For Profitable Agriculture which helped greatly in starting to market their beef.
